Alcohol and Weight Loss - Does Alcohol Make You Fat?

How many times have you heard people say that drinking alcohol makes you fat? Every time you decide to lose weight somebody always trots out the ill-informed wisdom that alcohol will make you put on weight. There is a whole lot of nonsense talked about alcohol and weight loss. Actually it's a complete myth.

Alcohol and Weight Loss - Does Alcohol Make You Fat?

Alcohol doesn't make you put on weight. Before you rush off and stock up your booze cupboard, it's not quite as simple as that! Alcohol does not make you fat, but it prevents you from losing weight. This might seem like semantics, but there is a very subtle and important difference that you should know about.

When you consume calories (energy), your body stores any energy that it doesn't need. However, when you drink alcohol your body doesn't know what to do with the calories. Why? Because alcohol is not a carbohydrate. It can't store the energy contained in alcohol. It doesn't know what to do with it. Faced with this dilemma it converts all the 'alcohol calories' into something called acetate. This acetate then remains in the blood stream.

It's what happens next that is important. Your body uses the acetate energy before, and in preference to the energy it has already stored. In other words it stops you using the energy you have already stored, i.e. the fat that you want to get rid of in order to lose weight.

Now you are aware of this what is your reaction? If you are serious about losing weight, you should give alcohol a miss. By drinking alcohol you are making it much more difficult to lose weight. All your efforts to change your eating habits could all be for nothing if you drink alcohol.

The other thing to remember about alcohol is that it ranks second only to fat for the number of calories that it contains. It is very high in calories, do beware.

The best thing to do is to get a really good diet program which has some good healthy meal plans set out for you and just give the alcohol a rest until you have reached your weight loss goal...and then drink in moderation.
